The Next Chapter of a Success Story: The IMD Presents the Recently Published IEEE 11073 SDC Core Standards for Manufacturer-Independent Medical Device Interoperability at DMEA Trade Fair

April 26th, 2019
Booth at DMEA trade fair 2019 in Berlin, Germany of OR.NET e.V. association.

Web Services for Medical Devices “WS4MD”: This vison became reality with the adoption of the last of the three IEEE 11073 Service-oriented Device Connectivity (SDC) core standards at the end of 2018 and its publication in January 2019. However, the story of success started years ago. In 2009, the “Devices Profile for Web Service (DPWS)” version 1.1 was adopted with the help of members of the IMD. Today, DPWS is the basic technology for IEEE 11073 SDC.

Martin Kasparick form the IMD is demonstrating the new IEEE 11073 SDC-based manufacturer-independent medical device interoperability by the example of an endoscopic surgery.

Within the OR.NET e.V. association, the IMD celebrated the adoption and publication of the IEEE 11073 SDC core standards with a showcase at DMEA trade fair in Berlin, Germany from 09th to  11th of April 2019. Taking the example of an endoscopic surgery, we demonstrated the manufacturer-independent interoperability of medical devices within the operating room. Based on this interconnection, we showed many value-added services: From simple-sounding features, like displaying devices parameters and vital signs in the field of vision of the surgeon, over remote control of devices parameters to complex intelligent workflow-based assistive services.

Currently, the research projects MoVEand PoCSpec keep pushing Web Service for Medical Devices forward at the IMD.

A clear message: “Run SDC” (from left to right: Max Rockstroh, Stefan Franke (both from ICCAS of the University of Leipzig) und Martin Kasparick (IMD)).

Physicians and operators are convinced by IEEE 11073 SDC-based interoperability as a key-enabler for future improvements and developments. Some manufacturers have officially announced the first product releases. Thus, the message is clear: “Run SDC”
